Brazil set to host 2014 World Cup

Brazil has launched a bid to host the 2014 World Cup. The 2014 World Cup looks certain to take place in Brazil after Colombia, the only other candidates, pulled out of the running.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) handed its bid document to world governing body Fifa on Friday. The five-time world champions have to finalise their bid, including government guarantees, by June 2007.

Fifa will conduct an inspection visit of Brazil in September 2007 before naming the 2014 hosts in November.

Brazil have hosted the event once before in 1950, when its team lost 2-1 to Uruguay in the final. Four previous World Cups have been held in South America: Uruguay 1930, Brazil 1950, Chile 1962 and Argentina 1978.

The Brazilian bid has faced criticism at home, amid warnings that the country's infrastructure is not up to scratch.

Glory, glory, Man United,

Glory, glory, Man United,
Glory, glory, Man United,
Glory, glory, Man United,
And the reds go marching on, on, on.

Just like the Busby Babes in Days gone by
We'll keep the Red Flags flying high
You've got to see yourself from far and wide
You've got to hear the masses sing with pride

United! Man United!
We're the boys in Red and we're on our way to Wem-ber-ly
Wem-ber-ly! Wem-ber-ly!
We're the famous Man United and we're going to Wem-ber-ly
Wem-ber-ly! Wem-ber-ly!
We're the famous Man United and we're going to Wem-ber-ly

In Seventy-Seven it was Docherty
Atkinson will make it Eighty-Three
And everyone will know just who we are
They'll be singing 'Que Sera Sera'

Wem-ber-ly! Wem-ber-ly!
We're the famous Man United and we're going to Wem-ber-ly

Glory Glory Man United
Glory Glory Man United
Glory Glory Man United
As the Reds Go Marching On! On! On! (3x)

Cristiano Ronaldo and Michael Carrick scored two goals each Tuesday to lead Manchester United to a 7-1 win over AS Roma and a place in the Champions League semifinals.

The two-time European Cup champions advanced 8-3 on aggregate at Old Trafford, where fans fought with police outside the stadium before the game.

Alan Smith, Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra also scored for United, while Daniele De Rossi scored for Roma.

"It was a fantastic performance. The play, (the) penetration (was) absolutely superb," United manager Alex Ferguson said as his team reached the last four for the first time since 2002. "We can't wait for the semifinals now."
